Louis van Gaal is convinced Barcelona forward Pedro has the skills to improve Man Utd ahead of the new Premier League season.

Van Gaal has identified Barcelona forward Pedro, 28, as the outgoing Angel di Maria's replacement to inject some energy into United's pedestrian attack.

And Van Gaal believes Pedro has the required 'speed and creativity' to enhance United up front.

"Barcelona have the speed of Neymar and Messi - and they have Pedro behind them," he told the Sun. "We have to compete with that.

"We can win the title if we can buy players with speed and creativity. We have to improve our selection in that way.

"They are our competitors. Chelsea have Hazard, Willian, Oscar — that is speed and creativity."

Pedro is unlikely to join United before their Premier League season opener with Tottenham on Saturday since Barca want him to play in their Uefa Super Cup tie with Sevilla next Tuesday.

Both Lionel Messi and Neymar are still ring-rusty from their Copa America excursions and coach Luis Enrique wants to use Pedro in the interim.

The Catalan, who has won three Champions Leagues with Barcelona, has a £22m buyout clause and has reportedly told friends and family he wants to join United.

Pedro has seen his game-time reduced since the arrivals of Neymar and Luis Suarez in successive summers and the Spain international is desperate to play regular football ahead of Euro 2016.
